Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a small but significant park located in southwestern Uganda. It is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which spans the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Here are some key highlights and information about Mgahinga Gorilla National Park:

Key Highlights:

  1. Mountain Gorillas:
    • Mgahinga is one of the only two parks in Uganda where you can see mountain gorillas. The park is home to the Nyakagezi gorilla group, which is well-habituated to human visitors.
  2. Golden Monkeys:
    • Besides gorillas, Mgahinga is also known for its population of endangered golden monkeys. Tracking these vibrant primates is a unique experience offered by the park.
  3. Part of the Virunga Volcanoes:
    • The park encompasses three of the eight Virunga volcanoes: Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo. These volcanic mountains provide stunning scenery and challenging hiking opportunities.
  4. Cultural Encounters:
    • Visitors can engage with the Batwa pygmies, the indigenous people of the forest, to learn about their traditional ways of life. The Batwa Trail is a guided cultural tour that showcases their rich cultural heritage.
  5. Biodiversity:
    • Despite its small size, the park is rich in biodiversity, featuring a variety of flora and fauna, including different bird species, small mammals, and unique plant life.

Practical Information:

  1. Location:
    • Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in the southwestern corner of Uganda, adjacent to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The nearest town is Kisoro.
  2. Accessibility:
    • The park can be accessed by road from Kampala, which is about a 9-10 hour drive. Alternatively, there are domestic flights to Kisoro airstrip, followed by a short drive to the park.
  3. Accommodation:
    • There are several accommodation options ranging from budget to mid-range lodges near the park. Popular options include Mount Gahinga Lodge, Amajambere Iwacu Community Camp, and Kisoro Tourist Hotel.
  4. Permits:
    • Gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking require permits, which should be booked in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority. These permits are essential due to limited availability.
  5. Best Time to Visit:
    • The best time to visit Mgahinga is during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February, when the trails are less muddy and trekking conditions are more favorable.

Activities:

  1. Gorilla Trekking:
    • The main attraction is trekking to see the mountain gorillas. The trek can be challenging but rewarding, offering an unforgettable experience with these magnificent creatures.
  2. Golden Monkey Tracking:
    • Track and observe the playful and vibrant golden monkeys in their natural habitat. This activity is less strenuous compared to gorilla trekking.
  3. Volcano Hiking:
    • Hike one of the three volcanic peaks: Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, or Mount Sabyinyo. Each hike offers unique challenges and breathtaking views.
  4. Bird Watching:
    • The park is home to over 180 bird species, making it a great destination for bird watchers. Look out for species like the Rwenzori turaco and the crowned hornbill.
  5. The Batwa Trail:
    • Take a guided cultural walk with the Batwa pygmies to learn about their traditional forest life, including hunting, gathering, and herbal medicine practices.
  6. Nature Walks:
    • Explore the park’s diverse habitats on guided nature walks, which offer opportunities to see smaller mammals, birds, and unique plant species.
