Facility Notes Sand River Camp is situated on a 20 acre piece of land within the Maasai Mara National Reserve on GPS Coordinates Latitude -1.654028 Longitude 35.215730. The camp comprises of 16-tents with a bed capacity of 32. The facility is open all year round and has a total number of 42 employees for its operations. It is owned and operated by Elewana Group.
The Maasai Mara National Reserve covers approximately 1,510 km2 under the management of Narok County Government. The Reserve is located in the northern portion of the Mara Serengeti eco-system, which covers 25,000 km2 straddling Tanzania and Kenya. The Maasai Mara National Reserve has about 95 species of mammals and 570 species of birds recorded. It is famous for hosting the wildebeest migration, which is dubbed as the ‘8th Wonder of the World’. The migration involves wildebeests, Thomson’s gazelles, Topi, elands, and zebras. These migrants are followed along their annual, circular route by predators, most notably lions and hyenas. Numerous other antelopes can be found, including Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles, impalas, duikers and Coke’s hartebeest. The Mara is also home to the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, African elephant, African buffalo, and Black Rhinoceros). The plains are also home to the distinctive Masai giraffe.
Energy management Sand River Camp is mainly powered by three (3) generators with an output of 165, 60 and 30 KvA respectively. The three are used interchangeably depending with the load and the fuel consumption is monitored. The genset system is computerized to monitor power usage for the camp.
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is used in both guest and staff kitchens. Water heating at the guest and staff areas is done through solar. There are 22 panels and four solar water heater tanks each with a capacity of 150 litres.
To conserve on energy, low wattage energy saving bulbs are fixed throughout the premises with the main switches easily accessible in all the guest tents to conserve power. Employees are sensitized on energy conservation through departmental briefings whereas visitors are sensitized on arrival briefings. In addition, there is the use of visual sensitization signage fixed in strategic areas to promote energy conservation
Environmental management The facility has conducted its annual environmental audit as required by Environmental (Impact assessment and Audit) Regulations, of 2003
Chemical use The hotel uses biodegradable bathroom amenities in the guest rooms, e.g. bathing soaps and shampoos supplied by Africology Ltd. Laundry and swimming pool chemicals are supplied by Diversey and Henkel respectively. Chemicals used are accompanied by Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
Chemicals used in the laundry machine are measured using calibrated cups. This ensures efficiency on chemical usage.
Fuel (diesel) is stored in 20,000 litre tank while paraffin is stored in 20 litre containers. LPG (Liquefied Petroleum gas) is packed in 25 kg and 50 kg gas cylinders. Precautionary signage properly fixed for safety purposes. Sand bags are fixed at the diesel storage area to prevent spillage to the environment

Drinking water for staff is bought in 20 litre dispenser bottles to reduce on plastic waste.
Water management Main source of water for the camp is obtained from a well within the premises. The water is solar pumped and stored in reservoirs with an average capacity of 47,000 litres which is supplied via gravity to the entire premises.
For water efficiency, the facility has fitted the guest rooms with water efficient shower filter heads and sensitizes its employees on water conservation during departmental meetings and briefings. The camp also employs the use of visual sensitization signage at main user points on the efficient use of water. Regular maintenance and repairs to the plumbing system is also done
Visitor communication & education Visitors are briefed upon arrival on the environmental values of the camp. In addition, the guest rooms have information folders with more details on the camp operations.
There is a visitors’ resource area which is equipped with reading information materials including environmental publications, travel magazines and nature conservation magazines
Pollution Paraffin Lanterns are used to light the paths at night with an aim to reduce light pollution and the generators are fitted with a muffler system to reduce on noise pollution
Environmental conservation Sand River Camp is built on low environmental footprint and blends in with the local surrounding. Guest tents are made of beige canvas raised on wooden platforms with green netting on the roof as a camouflage. Vegetation is largely left undisturbed.
The camp also supports the National Reserve rangers in wildlife monitoring and report on any incidences to the reserve management. Furthermore, the facility has a tree planting program whereby 1200 trees have been planted with 90% success growth rate.
Waste water management Grey water from the kitchen flows through a grease trap before draining into a soak pit. Grey water from the staff quarters, laundry and public areas is managed through the Bio-box waste water treatment system.
Black effluent within the guest area and staff quarters is also managed through the Bio-box system which consists of five (5) tanks. The system is connected to septic tanks with access manholes. Waste water is treated for recycling and re-use. There is a routine inspection schedule for the system to monitor its efficiency. A site drainage plan is available for the waste water management system which assists in monitoring.
The facility has a swimming pool which is cleaned via vacuum cleaning and backwash systems and water pumped back to the pool. PH and chlorine levels are checked daily through a test kit. Backwash is done depending on guest occupancy. Proper regular records for chemical use are maintained for monitoring purposes.
Water effluent sample tests have been conducted in compliance with Environmental Management and Coordination (Water Quality) Regulations of 2006 and an effluent discharge license issued.
Purchasing and supplies Dry goods such as flour are bought in bulk to reduce on packaging waste. Fruits and vegetables are packed in reusable crates which reduce on general waste produced, while meat and dairy products are stored in freezers

The facility organizes village visits to Talek village at a cost of US$15 per guest paid directly to the community.
