Irong Community Conservancy is a community-owned and managed area located in Baringo County, Kenya. It was established in 2008 by communities in the Kapkuikui, Loboi, Kamar, and Kaibosoi areas.
Location:
- Situated northeast of Lake Bogoria National Reserve.
- Located atop Irong Hill.
- Approximately a 20 km drive from Marigat on the B4 Nakuru-Sigor Road, followed by a short 5 km ride through Kaptim.
Size and Landscape:
- Covers an area of 51 square kilometers.
- The landscape includes the significant Irong Hill, which overlooks the Lake Bogoria ecosystem and the Perkerra Irrigation Scheme.
- Features a gradient sloping from Irong Hill to a wetland area, creating diverse habitats.
Wildlife:
- The conservancy was established partly to safeguard the migratory corridor for the Greater Kudu.
- The Greater Kudu population has significantly increased to over 400 due to conservation efforts.
- Other species sighted include dik-dik, hyrax, waterbuck, zebra, sitatunga, and hippo.
- Over 45 bird species have been recorded.
