Soysambu Conservancy in Kenya

Soysambu Conservancy is a 48,000-acre (194 square km) privately owned wildlife conservancy located on the shores of Lake Elementaita in the Great Rift Valley, Kenya. Situated between Lake Nakuru National Park and Lake Naivasha, it forms part of the Kenya Lake System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History: The land that now forms Soysambu Conservancy has a rich history tied to the Delamere family. In 1906, Lord Delamere, a prominent early British settler, acquired the Soysambu ranch. Initially a cattle ranch, the land has been managed by the Delamere family since then. Recognizing the ecological significance and the presence of diverse wildlife, the family established the Soysambu Conservancy in 2007. The name “Soysambu” comes from the Maasai language, meaning “the place of striated rock,” referring to the area’s landscape. The conservancy was created with the aim of conserving the flora, fauna, and scenic beauty of the ranch while promoting responsible land management and public access.

Wildlife: Soysambu Conservancy is a significant haven for a variety of wildlife, with over 12,000 animals calling it home. Notable species include:

  • Rothschild’s Giraffe: Soysambu is a crucial sanctuary for this endangered subspecies, hosting over 10% of the world’s remaining population.
  • Buffalo: Large herds roam the open plains.
  • Zebras, Elands, Waterbucks, Impalas, and Warthogs: These herbivores are commonly sighted.

  • Leopards, Hyenas, Jackals, and Serval Cats: Predators are present, though sightings can be less frequent.
  • Birdlife: With over 450 recorded bird species, including flamingos, pelicans, African fish eagles, and various waterfowls around Lake Elementaita, it’s a paradise for birdwatchers. Lake Elementaita is the last remaining breeding site for the Great White Pelican in Kenya.

  • Monkeys: Vervet, Colobus, and Sykes monkeys are often seen in wooded areas, while Olive Baboons are common on the ground.

Conservation Efforts: Soysambu Conservancy is deeply committed to conservation with various ongoing projects:

  • Rothschild’s Giraffe Protection: Focused efforts to safeguard and monitor their significant population.
  • Habitat Preservation and Restoration: Working to maintain the diverse ecosystems within the conservancy.
  • Wetland Restoration: Projects aimed at restoring the Mbaruk rivermouth and the riverine gallery forest.

  • Community Engagement: Collaborating with local communities on conservation initiatives and promoting sustainable practices.

  • Anti-Poaching Measures: Implementing strategies to protect the wildlife within the conservancy.
  • Ramsar Site Protection: Lake Elementaita, within the conservancy, is a designated Ramsar site (Wetland of International Importance), and efforts are in place to protect its ecological values.

  • Research and Monitoring: Supporting research activities, including student projects, to inform conservation management decisions.

Tourism and Activities: Soysambu Conservancy offers a more intimate and less crowded safari experience compared to national parks. Activities include:

  • Game Drives: Both day and night game drives in open safari vehicles, guided by experienced rangers. Night drives offer the chance to see nocturnal animals like the Aardvark and Leopard.

  • Bird Watching Safaris: With a vast array of birdlife, guided tours focus on spotting both resident and migratory species around Lake Elementaita and other habitats.

  • Nature Walks: Guided walks to explore the flora and fauna up close, providing insights into the smaller aspects of the ecosystem.

  • Horseback Safaris: A unique way to experience the conservancy and get closer to wildlife.

  • Lake Elementaita Boat Rides and Birdwatching: Opportunities to explore the lake and observe the numerous bird species, including flamingos and pelicans.

  • Cultural Visits: Interactions with local communities can often be arranged.

  • Bush Dining and Sundowners: Enjoy meals and drinks in scenic locations within the conservancy.

Accommodation: Soysambu Conservancy offers various accommodation options, including campsites and lodges, providing different levels of comfort and immersion in the natural environment. The Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp is a notable lodging option located along the lake shores.

Soysambu Conservancy plays a vital role in conserving the unique biodiversity of the Great Rift Valley, particularly the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe and the important birdlife around Lake Elementaita. Its commitment to conservation, coupled with its diverse tourism offerings, makes it a significant destination for those seeking an authentic and less crowded Kenyan safari experience.
