About Tsavo East National Park:
Tsavo East National Park, often called the “Theatre of the Wild,” is one of the oldest and largest national parks in Kenya, covering a vast area of 13,747 square kilometers. It’s located inland from the Coast, near Voi in Taita-Taveta County. Together with Tsavo West National Park, it forms one of the largest protected wilderness areas in the world.
Tsavo East National Park provides a classic African safari experience with its iconic landscapes, abundant wildlife, and rich history.
What makes Tsavo East National Park special:
- Vast Open Plains: The park is characterized by its flat, dry plains, which were once part of the Taru Desert.
- Red Elephants: Tsavo East is famous for its large herds of elephants that appear “red” due to rolling and bathing in the park’s rusty-red soil.
- Yatta Plateau: This is the world’s longest lava flow, stretching for approximately 300 kilometers along the park’s western boundary.
- Galana River: This significant river flows through the park, providing a vital water source and supporting diverse wildlife.
- Lugard Falls: Despite the name, these aren’t traditional waterfalls but a series of rapids on the Galana River, featuring bizarrely eroded rock formations.
