About Tsavo East National Park:

Tsavo East National Park, often called the “Theatre of the Wild,” is one of the oldest and largest national parks in Kenya, covering a vast area of 13,747 square kilometers. It’s located inland from the Coast, near Voi in Taita-Taveta County. Together with Tsavo West National Park, it forms one of the largest protected wilderness areas in the world.

Tsavo East National Park provides a classic African safari experience with its iconic landscapes, abundant wildlife, and rich history.

What makes Tsavo East National Park special:

  • Vast Open Plains: The park is characterized by its flat, dry plains, which were once part of the Taru Desert.
  • Red Elephants: Tsavo East is famous for its large herds of elephants that appear “red” due to rolling and bathing in the park’s rusty-red soil.
  • Yatta Plateau: This is the world’s longest lava flow, stretching for approximately 300 kilometers along the park’s western boundary.
  • Galana River: This significant river flows through the park, providing a vital water source and supporting diverse wildlife.
  • Lugard Falls: Despite the name, these aren’t traditional waterfalls but a series of rapids on the Galana River, featuring bizarrely eroded rock formations.
  • Mudanda Rock: A 1.6-kilometer inselberg (rocky hill) that acts as a water catchment, attracting elephants and other wildlife, especially during the dry season. It also offers excellent viewpoints.
  • Aruba Dam: Built in 1952 across the Voi River, this reservoir attracts numerous animals and water birds, making it a great game-viewing spot.
  • “Man-Eating Lions of Tsavo” History: The park’s history is intertwined with the infamous story of two lions that terrorized railway construction workers in the late 19th century.

Wildlife found at Tsavo East National Park:

Tsavo East is home to a wide array of wildlife, including:

  • The “Big Five”: Lion (including the Tsavo lion males which sometimes lack manes), Leopard, Elephant (often the famous red elephants), Buffalo, and (though less common) Rhino.
  • Other Mammals: Cheetah, Hyena, Giraffe, Zebra, various antelope species (Waterbuck, Gerenuk, Lesser Kudu, Impala), Hippo, Crocodile, and even the endangered Hirola antelope.
  • Birdlife: Over 500 recorded bird species, including Ostrich, Kestrels, Buzzards, Starlings, Weaver Birds, Kingfishers, Hornbills, Secretary Birds, and Herons.

Things to Do in Tsavo East National Park:

  • Game Drives: Explore the vast plains in a safari vehicle for excellent wildlife viewing, especially during the early morning and late afternoon.
  • Visit Mudanda Rock: Climb this rock formation for panoramic views of the park and to observe animals drinking at the dam below.
  • See Lugard Falls: Witness the powerful Galana River cascading through the unique rock formations.
  • Explore the Yatta Plateau: Marvel at the sheer scale of the world’s longest lava flow.
  • Bird Watching: With its diverse habitats, Tsavo East is a birdwatcher’s paradise.
  • Visit Aruba Dam: A prime spot for observing a variety of animals and water birds.
  • Bush Walks and Guided Treks: Some areas offer the opportunity for guided walks to experience the smaller wonders of the park (ensure to book with a reputable operator).
  • Camping: Experience the wilderness firsthand by staying at one of the public or special campsites (special campsites require advance booking).

Tsavo East National Park Entrance Fees (as of early 2025 – subject to change):

It’s always best to confirm current fees with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) or your tour operator. However, here are the rates as of early 2025:

Safari Lodges, Tented camos and other Accommodation options at Tsavo East National Park:

Tsavo East offers a range of accommodation options both inside and outside the park to suit different budgets, including:

  • Public Campsites: Offer basic amenities like water, toilets, bathrooms, and a kitchen area (no prior booking usually required).
  • Special Campsites: Provide only camping grounds; visitors must bring all their supplies and book in advance for exclusive use.

How to Get to Tsavo East National Park:

  • By Road: The park has several gates. Mtito Andei Gate is about 233 km south of Nairobi and 250 km north of Mombasa along the main Nairobi-Mombasa Road. From Malindi, you can use the western road (C103) to access the park via Sala Gate.
  • By Air: There are several airstrips within the park (Voi, Aruba, Satao, Sala, Ithumba, etc.) for chartered flights.

About Tsavo West National Park:

Tsavo West National Park, often overshadowed by its larger eastern counterpart, offers a dramatically different and arguably more scenic safari experience. Covering 9,065 square kilometers of diverse landscapes, it’s a captivating destination characterized by rugged wilderness, volcanic hills, and lush oases.

Tsavo West National Park provides a more intimate and scenic safari experience compared to its eastern neighbor, with diverse landscapes and unique attractions like Mzima Springs and the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. It’s a fantastic destination for those seeking a blend of wildlife viewing and natural beauty.

What makes Tsavo West National Park special:

  • Diverse Scenery: Unlike the flat plains of Tsavo East, Tsavo West boasts a varied topography including rolling volcanic hills, rocky outcrops, acacia woodlands, riverine forests, and the dramatic Shetani Lava Flow.
  • Mzima Springs: A true oasis in the arid landscape, these natural springs gush millions of gallons of crystal-clear water daily, forming pools that are home to hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of fish. An underwater viewing chamber offers a unique perspective.
  • Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary: A fenced sanctuary within the park dedicated to the conservation of the endangered black rhino, offering a higher chance of spotting these elusive creatures.
  • Lake Jipe: A beautiful, shallow lake bordering Tanzania, teeming with aquatic life and a haven for birdwatchers. Boat trips are a popular activity here.
  • Poacher’s Lookout: A vantage point offering panoramic views of the plains below, often with Mount Kilimanjaro visible in the distance on a clear day.
  • Shetani Caves: Explore these lava tube caves formed by ancient volcanic activity.
  • First World War Sites: Tsavo West was a battleground during the East African Campaign of WWI, and remnants of fortifications can still be seen.

Wildlife found at Tsavo West National Park:

Tsavo West is home to a good variety of wildlife, including:

  • The “Big Five”: Lion (including the Tsavo lion), Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, and Black Rhino (especially in the Ngulia Sanctuary).
  • Other Mammals: Cheetah, Wild Dog, Giraffe, Zebra, Hippo, various antelope species (Lesser Kudu is a highlight), and smaller mammals like Dik-dik and Hyrax.
  • Birdlife: With over 600 recorded species, Tsavo West is a birdwatcher’s paradise, featuring both resident and migratory birds.

Things to Do in Tsavo West National Park:

  • Game Drives: Explore the park’s diverse habitats in search of wildlife. The varied terrain can make sightings more challenging but also more rewarding.
  • Visit Mzima Springs: Observe hippos and crocodiles from the underwater viewing chamber and enjoy the lush surroundings.
  • Explore the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary: Increase your chances of spotting the endangered black rhino.
  • Boat Safari on Lake Jipe: Enjoy bird watching and see hippos and crocodiles from the water.
  • Hike to Poacher’s Lookout: Take in the panoramic views of the park and possibly Kilimanjaro.
  • Explore the Shetani Lava Flow and Caves: Witness the dramatic volcanic landscape.

About Lumo Community Wildlife Conservancy:

The Lumo Community Wildlife Conservancy is a community-led wildlife conservation initiative located in Taita-Taveta County in southeastern Kenya. It’s situated near Mwatate, in the former Coast Province, approximately 220 kilometers (137 miles) from Mombasa and about 360 kilometers (224 miles) from Nairobi.

The name “LUMO” is an acronym derived from the names of the three community ranches that came together to form the conservancy in 2001: Lualenyi, Mramba, and Oza.

What makes Lumo Community Wildlife Conservancy special:

  • Location: It is strategically located between Tsavo West National Park and the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. This makes it a crucial wildlife corridor, particularly for elephants migrating between Tsavo East and Tsavo West and even connecting to Tanzania’s Mkomazi National Park.
  • Size: The conservancy covers an area of 48,000 acres (approximately 195 square kilometers or 75 square miles).
  • Community-Owned and Managed: LUMO is a significant example of a community-driven conservation effort. The land belongs to the local Taita community, who are actively involved in its management and benefit from tourism revenue and conservation initiatives.
  • Wildlife: Despite its relatively small size, LUMO is home to a diverse range of wildlife
  • Unique Experiences:
    • Night Game Drives: Unlike national parks, LUMO offers the unique opportunity for night game drives to spot nocturnal wildlife.
    • Walking Safaris: Guided bush walks are available to learn about the smaller flora and fauna and animal tracking.
    • Cultural Tours: Engage with the local Taita community to learn about their traditions and way of life.
  • Accommodation: There are several accommodation options within and near the conservancy, including:
    • Soroi Lions Bluff Lodge: Offers stunning panoramic views.
    • Soroi Cheetah Tented Camp: Provides a more intimate safari experience.
    • Soroi Leopard Lair Cottages: Offers secluded and personalized stays.
    • Camping: Campsites are available for a more adventurous experience.
  • Conservation Focus: LUMO is not just a tourism destination; it’s actively involved in wildlife conservation, anti-poaching efforts, habitat restoration, and community empowerment through education, employment, and sustainable practices.

In summary, the Lumo Community Wildlife Conservancy offers a more intimate and community-focused safari experience while still providing excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, including the unique chance to see nocturnal animals. Its location as a vital wildlife corridor makes it an important part of the larger Tsavo ecosystem.
