Naibunga Conservancy is a significant community-based conservation area located in Laikipia County, Kenya. It’s a noteworthy example of how Maasai communities are actively involved in wildlife protection and rangeland management on their ancestral lands.

Key information about the Naibunga Conservancy:

Location:

  • Situated in northern Laikipia County, approximately 40-68 km from Nanyuki town.

  • It borders Isiolo County to the north and is near other prominent conservancies like Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
  • The Ewaso Nyiro River forms part of its western boundary.

Size and Structure:

  • The conservancy covers a substantial area of 47,740 hectares (approximately 477 square kilometers or over 118,000 acres).
  • It is an amalgamation of nine group ranches owned by the Mukogodo Maasai community: Koija, Kijabe, Tiamamut, Ilmotiok, Nkiloriti, Munishoi, Musul, Il Polei, and Morupusi.

  • For administrative and management purposes, the conservancy has been divided into three units: Naibunga Upper, Naibunga Central, and Naibunga Lower, each managed independently.

Governance:

  • The conservancy is a community-owned and managed initiative.

  • A Conservancy Board, with representatives from the constituent group ranches, oversees its operations.
  • It operates under the patronage of the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT), a key organization supporting community conservancies in northern and coastal Kenya.

Conservation Focus:

  • The primary goals of the Naibunga Conservancy include:
    • Wildlife Conservation: Protecting a diverse array of species, including elephants, Grevy’s zebra, common zebra, lions, cheetahs, wild dogs, various antelopes, and more. It serves as an important elephant corridor.

    • Rangeland Management: Implementing sustainable grazing practices to benefit both livestock and wildlife.
    • Habitat Protection: Conserving the diverse plant life and water sources, including the Ewaso Nyiro River.
    • Reducing Human-Wildlife Conflict: Implementing strategies to mitigate conflicts between the community and wildlife, such as the construction of electric fences.
    • Combating Poaching: Employing community scouts for wildlife monitoring and anti-poaching efforts.

Community Impact and Livelihoods:

  • The conservancy aims to improve the livelihoods of the local Mukogodo Maasai community through various initiatives:
    • Employment: Providing jobs for community members as rangers, lodge staff, and in other conservancy-related activities.

    • Tourism: Hosting several eco-lodges and campsites that generate income for the community through bed night fees and employment. Examples include Ol Lentile Lodge, Ol Gaboli Bandas, Koija Star Beds, and Lewaso Cottages.

    • Community Projects: Supporting education through bursaries, improving access to water, and promoting women’s empowerment through income-generating activities like beadwork and aloe vera cultivation.
    • Improved Security: Enhancing security through ranger patrols and communication networks.

Tourism and Activities:

Naibunga Conservancy offers a range of tourism experiences:

  • Wildlife Viewing: Game drives and guided walks to see the diverse wildlife.

  • Cultural Tourism: Visits to Maasai villages and cultural centers.
  • Bird Watching: The area is home to a variety of bird species.

  • Scenic Views: Enjoying the landscapes and unique geological formations like the Osoit Oitashe rocks.
  • Community Lodges and Campsites: Staying at community-owned facilities provides direct benefits to the local people.

The Naibunga Conservancy stands as a significant example of successful community-led conservation in Laikipia, balancing the needs of wildlife, the environment, and the local Maasai communities.
