Shimba Hills National Reserve – The Paradise of the Sable Antelope

Overview

Nestled in the lush hinterland of Kenya’s South Coast, approximately 30–33 kilometers southwest of Mombasa and a short drive from Diani Beach, Shimba Hills National Reserve is one of Kenya’s most scenic and biologically diverse protected areas. Covering approximately 192.5 square kilometers, the reserve is renowned for its rolling hills, dense coastal rainforest, spectacular viewpoints, abundant wildlife, and Kenya’s only breeding population of the rare sable antelope. The reserve is managed jointly by the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Forest Service.

History

The Shimba Hills area was first gazetted as a protected forest in 1903, making it one of Kenya’s oldest protected natural areas. Additional grassland sections were incorporated in 1924, and in 1968 most of the forest reserve was officially designated as a national reserve to protect its unique ecosystems and wildlife. Today, it remains one of the country’s most important conservation landscapes and is included in the proposed UNESCO Coastal Forests of Kenya World Heritage nomination.

Geography and Landscape

The reserve rises dramatically from the coastal plains, forming a dissected plateau with elevations ranging from approximately 120 to 450 meters above sea level. The highest points, including Pengo Hill and Marare Hill, provide breathtaking panoramic views stretching across the Indian Ocean, Diani coastline, Chale Island, and inland toward Tsavo. The reserve’s terrain consists of rolling hills, valleys, forests, grasslands, wetlands, and riverine ecosystems.

Climate

Shimba Hills enjoys a cooler climate than Kenya’s coastal beaches due to its elevation. Temperatures average around 24°C, while annual rainfall ranges from approximately 855mm to 1,682mm. Morning mist, cloud cover, and refreshing sea breezes create a pleasant atmosphere throughout much of the year.

Biodiversity Hotspot

Shimba Hills is considered one of East Africa’s most important biodiversity hotspots. The reserve contains one of the largest remaining coastal rainforests in East Africa and supports an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna. More than 50% of Kenya’s rare plant species occur within the reserve, including several endangered orchids, cycads, and other endemic coastal forest plants.

Wildlife

The reserve hosts an impressive diversity of mammals, including:

  • African Elephants
  • Sable Antelope (Kenya’s only breeding population)
  • Buffaloes
  • Giraffes
  • Leopards
  • Hyenas
  • Waterbucks
  • Bushbucks
  • Bush Pigs
  • Serval Cats
  • Genets
  • Civets
  • Blue Duikers
  • Red Duikers
  • Suni Antelope
  • Black-and-White Colobus Monkeys
  • Sykes Monkeys
  • Vervet Monkeys
  • Bush Babies and Galagos

The reserve is especially famous for the sable antelope, often referred to as one of Africa’s most beautiful antelope species. Shimba Hills represents the last stronghold for this species in Kenya.

Birdlife

Birdwatchers will find Shimba Hills exceptionally rewarding. More than 110 bird species have been recorded, including numerous coastal endemics. Notable species include:

  • Crowned Hornbill
  • African Hawk Eagle
  • Honeyguides
  • Sunbirds
  • Turacos
  • Woodpeckers
  • Guinea Fowl
  • Falcons
  • Quails
  • Cuckoos

The combination of forest, grassland, and wetland habitats creates ideal conditions for both resident and migratory birds.

Sheldrick Falls

One of the reserve’s most famous attractions is Sheldrick Falls, a spectacular 21-meter waterfall hidden deep within the forest. Visitors can reach the falls via a guided hike through lush rainforest, encountering wildlife, birds, butterflies, and scenic landscapes along the way. The waterfall offers a refreshing natural pool where hikers can cool off after the trek.

Conservation Importance

Shimba Hills is one of Kenya’s most significant conservation areas. It protects critical coastal rainforest habitat, serves as a refuge for endangered species, and conserves watersheds that supply fresh water to surrounding communities. Conservation initiatives include elephant management, habitat restoration, biodiversity monitoring, and community-based conservation programs. The reserve also connects to the nearby Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary through an elephant corridor that helps reduce human-wildlife conflict.
